Bernard Friot writes fundamental books, which deserve to be read more widely. In French bookstores, it is his homonym author of children’s books that is easier to find. Why this situation?

Une de mes lubies est de garder un intérêt, au fil des années, pour le genre “zombies” en litérature. Cela a dû commencer il y a une dizaine d’années par un roman acheté et lu un peu par hasard, en vacances. Depuis, je demande aux libraires les nouveautés zombies. La fréquence de publication est assez faible, donc il est facile de suivre sans que ca ne devienne ma nourriture principale. A chaque fois, je prends plaisir à voir comment l’auteur vient réinstantier les codes du genre, tout en les renouvelant. Je viens de finir “Feed”, 1er tome de la trilogie “NewsFlesh”. Je suis encore une fois surpris des nouveautés apportées dans un genre pourtant déjà très exploré.

One of my fads is to keep an interest, over the years, for the “zombie” genre in literature. It must have started about ten years ago with a novel bought and read somewhat by chance, on vacation. Since then, I ask bookstores for new entries on their zombies bookshelves. Publishing frequency is quite low, so it’s easy to follow without it becoming my mainstay. Each time, I take pleasure in seeing how the author comes to re-instantiate the codes of the genre, while renewing them. I just finished “Feed”, 1st volume of the “NewsFlesh” trilogy. I am once again surprised by the novelties brought to a genre that is already very much explored.
